Well, today was our most recent trip to the Pomona RV show. We have gone to this show for several years as we work through the decision about our future fulltime RV. We have gone back and forth between favoring a fifth-wheel trailer and a motorhome.
Fifth-wheel trailers offer a fairly residential feel inside, but, since they are trailers, they cannot be too heavy for commonly available trucks (needed to pull them.) The result is that they are not quite as solidly built as heavy duty motorhomes. Woodwork (cabinets, etc) are not normally solid hardwood, doors are often hollow, and other weight-saving measures are taken to keep the trailer weight reasonable.
Motorhomes (diesel pushers, in our case) are much heavier duty. They have sturdy chassis, bus-size tires, strong diesel motors, and more solid wood throughout. They can also carry much more cargo (inside and out) due to available space and additional carrying capacity.
During our search for the perfect fulltime RV for our needs, we have vacillated between preferring either a fifth-wheel or a motorhome. Now that many of the high-end fifth-wheel manufacturers have gone out of business (due to the economic downturn) we are left with fewer options in the fifth-wheel field. We are now looking very closely at diesel pusher motorhomes for a variety of reasons. In future posts, we'll discuss the various reasons why we are now thinking that a diesel pusher motorhome is the best answer for our needs.
Stay tuned, and we'll keep you posted!
